Overview:
I was due for an optics upgrade on my western hunting outfit – a HOWA .308. I wanted quality glass but didn't want to break the bank with the purchase either. My dad has been a big fan of the Maven products for a long time and recommend that I take a look at their C-series rifle scopes.
The CRS.3 is a First Focal Plane (FFP) optic that boasts a broad 4-20x magnification range (versus my previous 3-15) for versatile shooting capabilities. It features a 50mm objective lens diameter offering a wide field of view and excellent light collection, precise dialable elevation and windage turrets for accurate adjustments, an illuminated reticle to ensure visibility in low-light conditions, side parallax adjustment for enhanced clarity/fine-tuning reticle shift, and is housed in a robust 30mm tube. The CRS.3 is offered in two reticle options: the SHR-W (MOA), which I elected for, and SHR-MIL (MIL). It retails for $700.
All said, it sounded like the perfect blend of quality and features I was looking for at an approachable price-point, and seemed to check all the boxes for my western hunting. I placed my order then mounted, bore-sighted, and range shot with the new scope prior to taking it on this year's Montana mule deer hunting trip.
Here are my thoughts.
What I Like:
In general there was a lot to love about the Maven CRS.3. The glass was exceptionally clear and bright and the adjustments were smooth and audible. I especially liked the elevation and windage dials - while there aren't any covers, the dials won't move on their own. Once you make the needed adjustments, you simply screw the top off each dial and reset the MOA cylinder back to zero, and then re-thread the top back on.
The scope was extremely intuitive and easy to use. After bore-sighting I was able to get dialed quickly at 50 yards, then zeroed at 100 yards before the hunting trip. Over several days in the field through rough conditions and changing weather, it proved to be both durable and reliable and delivered when it came time to take the shot in the field.
Beyond the clear and bright glass, the scope feels substantial/durable without being overly heavy, and it offers a number of features typically found on higher-end optics such as side parallax adjustment, an etched reticle, phase correction coating, Nitrogen purging to be both water and fog-proof, and a lifetime warranty.
What I don't Like:
There's really not much to dislike about the CRS.3.
If I was going to nitpick, I found the illuminated reticle to be a bit gimmicky and unnecessary, and likely something I will never have use for, but beyond that, the scope delivered in every way I could have hoped for.
Perfect For: With a broad magnification range up to 20x, exceptional clarity, smooth, precise adjustments, and heavy-duty construction that can endure hard use, plus a lifetime warranty, the CRS.3 offers an extremely high-quality mid-to-long-range hunting scope at a more affordable price than other brands with the same feature set and quality.
